Description

It looks like it's mandatory to specify page name for regexp in the rewrite rule. Example rule:
rewrite /default.aspx?r=(.*)$ /Register.aspx?r=$1 last;

This rule would act normally and it will change:
http://www.site.com/default.aspx?r=12345 to
http://www.site.com/Register.aspx?r=12345

But if you will try to get the same result without specifying page name the rule wouldn't work:
rewrite /?r=(.*)$ /Register.aspx?r=$1 last;

Test with: http://www.site.com/?r=12345

The regular expression of the rewrite directive is matched against a normalized URI without arguments, much like location matching. Both configuration snippets provided won't match anything.

Note well the rewrite_log directive, it can be very useful when debugging rewrites.
