Description
vim syntax highlighting can't handle variables with "-".
$arg_a-b-c will only show $arg_a as variable color.

That's correct, as dashes are not allowed in variable names, and
$arg_a-b-cis equivalent to${arg_a}-b-c- that is, the$arg_avariable followed by the-b-cstatic string.
