I have installed stable version from ppa
add-apt-repository ppa:nginx/stable
apt-get -y update
apt-get -y install nginx
service nginx start
when I visited localhost:80 I got:
500 Internal Server Error
line from /var/log/nginx/error.log:

but on my system index.html was installed to /usr/share/nginx/html/index.html
to fix this I had to change root directive in a server block to
root /usr/share/nginx/html;

Feel free to report the issue to the package author. It is inappropriate place to report it here though, as this bug tracking system is about tracking bug in nginx itself and official packages as available from nginx.org, not arbitrary 3rd party packages.
