Description
As a simple example, try this configuration:
server { listen 443 ssl default_server; ssl_verify_client on; error_page 400 /auth_required.html; ...
Without sending a ssl cert, I still get the default nginx error page for a 400 Bad Request.
I attached the full configuration file.

The "client sent no required SSL certificate" errors are reported with a special error code, 496, and you have to use
error_page 496 /auth_required.html;
to handle them. Additional details can be found in the documentation.
