Description

If you use variables in access_log path, nginx critically fails at creating the file:
open() "/var/log/nginx/localhost/access.log" failed (2: No such file or directory) while logging request

Minimal configuration to reproduce:

events {
    worker_connections  1024;
}

http {
    server {
        listen       80;
        server_name  localhost;

        access_log  /var/log/nginx/$host/access.log;
    }
}

Also tested on Windows:
CreateFile() "C:\nginx-1.6.2/logs/localhost/access.log" failed (3: FormatMessage() error:(15105)) while logging request

Damn I had not read the docs until the end of section...

http://nginx.org/en/docs/http/ngx_http_log_module.html#access_log

Could you requalify this as enhancement proposal and delete this comment?

Resolution: invalid
Status: newclosed

Variables can be used in access_log in any place, including path. But nginx won't try to create intermediate directories if they don't exist. And I don't think it should.
